Trend Filter Indicator MT4
Platform: MT4 Type: Trend Last update: September 13, 2026The Trend Filter Indicator for MT4 is an oscillator built on a filtered moving average, designed to answer one simple question: is the market trending, and if so, in which direction?
Example chart:

How to use the Trend Filter Indicator for MT4?
The Trend Filter Indicator plots a single line in a separate window, shifting between three colors.
Green marks a bullish trend and points to long opportunities. Red marks a bearish trend and points to short opportunities.
Yellow shows a flat or indecisive market – a signal to stay out and wait.
Trading the color transitions
Rather than reacting to yellow directly, treat it as a waiting period.
The actual trade trigger comes when yellow resolves into green or red, since that shift usually confirms the new trend has enough momentum to be worth acting on.
Jumping in while the line is still yellow risks entering before the market has actually picked a direction.
One practical advantage here is that the indicator doesn’t repaint.
Its readings are based on closed candle data, so once a color prints, it won’t change retroactively. It means what you see in a backtest is exactly what you’d have seen live.
Trade examples

As you can see on the GBP/USD H1 chart, the Trend Filter line stays yellow when the market is choppy.
When a clear uptrend starts, it turns green.
When the market reverses, it quickly turns red, with little yellow in between.

The EUR/AUD H4 chart shows a similar pattern.
Green and red phases can last for a while, with short yellow periods in between when the trend pauses or changes direction.
Settings
These are available settings. The default MA period filter is set to 9, but this value can be adjusted.

Bottom line
The Trend Filter Indicator for MT4 isn’t meant to predict what price will do next. Its main purpose is to help you avoid trading when the market direction isn’t clear.
This simple approach helps reduce the noise and stops you from jumping into trades every time price makes a small move.
