How to use the Vortex Indicator for MT4?

The two Vortex lines are VI+ (blue), tracking positive directional movement and VI- (red), tracking negative directional movement. Whichever line sits on top at any given moment tells you which side, bulls or bears, currently has the upper hand.

The Vortex Indicator’s design actually borrows from Viktor Schauberger’s studies of natural vortex motion in water, applying fluid dynamics concepts to how it filters market noise and captures shifts in momentum.

Trading the crossovers

The core signal is simple: when blue crosses above red, bulls are gaining control and it’s worth watching for a buy opportunity.

When red crosses above blue, bears are taking over and it’s worth watching for a sell opportunity.

Spotting divergence

Watch for divergence, moments when price prints a new high or low, but the lines fail to confirm it with a matching move.

This mismatch often signals the current trend is running out of steam and a reversal could be close.

Reading slope and distance

The strength of a signal often comes down to how the lines are positioned, not just which one is on top.

A steep slope paired with a widening gap between the two Vortex lines points to a strong, accelerating trend. When the lines start converging back toward each other, that’s typically an early warning that momentum is fading.

Adjusting the settings

The Vortex Indicator has one setting worth knowing, and it is VI_Length, set to 14 by default.

Raise it for smoother, less reactive signals or lower it for faster, more sensitive readings. It’s fine to adjust based on the currency pair you’re trading, but avoid pushing it to extreme values in either direction.

Bottom line

The Vortex Indicator for MetaTrader 4 is not only about color of its lines. Space between the lines has big impact as well.

A wide, steady gap reflects a trend with real conviction behind it. While a tightening gap is often the first sign that conviction is fading, well before a crossover confirms it.

Learn to read that relationship and the indicator becomes less of a signal generator and more of a genuine gauge of trend health.
